God, Sin, and the Technological Body

Made during Joyce’s Brown graduate program, these five films form one artistic cycle. Together, they examine God and sin through technology by studying the physical and spiritual instability of the body. Games, compositing, social media, and mediated pilgrimage become ways to investigate how a body encounters belief through a screen.

The five films

Still from The Body, NoodWatch film ↗

Writer, Director, Editor

A narrative short film about my alter ego metamorphosizing into a noodle. Rather than presenting the body as a container for the self, this film imagines it as a continuation of the world, deliberately collapsing categories that are usually understood as separate: body and landscape, pleasure and disgust, self and environment.

Still from Ready Mermaid OneWatch film ↗

Writer, Director, Mermaid

A choose-your-own-adventure short film where the player directs a mermaid until the mermaid starts fighting back. Positioned so that the form (a game) and the question (whose body is this) are the same thing.

Still from “fruit”Watch film ↗

Director, Editor

An archival short film about existence as a blip in the matrix, nature as insurmountable, and the nihilist certainty that everything is as it should be. Used footage from Werner Herzog’s seminal monologue in Burden of Dreams (1982) on the misery of the jungle, layered over silent exploitation film Is Your Daughter Safe? (1927) and instructional documentary “The Growth of Plants” — with the artist green-screened on top, vaping.

Still from Crack Some EggsWatch film ↗

Writer, Director, Actor

A monologue narrative short film that reframes how Gen Z metabolizes trauma—as reclamation, not rupture. It collides the elevated cadence of Christian devotion with Gen Z slang and the melodrama of Instagram Reels and TikTok, trading God for the secular objects of modern worship: alcohol, romance, distraction, and the performance of being “over it.”

Still from PilgrimageWatch film ↗

Pilgrimage

05 / 05

Director, Editor, Subject

A portrait film of a solo nine-day, 4,000-mile drive from Rhode Island to California, undertaken two days after the Brown University shooting. Framed as a Buddhist pilgrimage — “physical body, sacred landscape, and in suffering you find karmic purification” — the film moves through exploring small-town Alabama, a New Orleans tarot reading, and a Texas constable who shreds the subject’s speeding ticket on the morning of Christmas Eve.

Noodle installation and performance

PRECURSOR · 2024

Noodle: Presence, Preparation, Object

Artist

A performance and installation at Riley Hall, University of Notre Dame: two-channel video, a sound piece, and a live noodle performance.

This installation/performance is the precursor to the Brown film cycle. Encounter it as the material beginning of the investigation into the body’s physical and spiritual instability.
